Kmart in Vernon, CT

This Kmart was the fourth location in Connecticut, opening in 1975. This is only 3 years after the first one opened in Manchester, 1972.

This Kmart continued on, being renovated sometime in the 1990's. Then Kmart hit bankruptcy in 2002, and while other Kmarts' around the area shut down during the time, this one managed to stay alive. Now the store has made it to its 42nd birthday, and is still keeping its 1990's decor.

This location seems to be in the same shape as any other Big Kmart in the county, with a small plaza attached to it. Anyways, here are some photos of the Kmart from 2017:

Norwich

109 Salem Turnpike (CT 82), Norwich, CT
This location closed in 2002, and sat vacant until Backus Hospital opened up in the former space in 2005. Photos:

This store was also closed in 2002, and was empty until 2005, when a Ocean State Job Lot took over some of the space. Around 2010, Tractor Supply opened up in the rest of the Ames area, leaving it at its current state. Photos:

158 Parkway North, Waterford, CT
This location was also during the bankruptcy in 2002. It sat vacant until early-2005, when it was demolished, and a Lowe's opened up in the former Ames spot in 2006. Photos:

Ames in Eastern Connecticut (Pt. 1)

When Ames went bankrupt in 2002, the chain left behind many locations in Eastern Connecticut, so I thought I thought I could tell you what happened to Ames locations across the area:

Windham County

Dayville

728 Hartford Pike (CT 101), Dayville, CT
This location was one of the first in the state, opening in 1983. It was one of the longest ones vacant, lasting 8 years. Nothing opening at the former Ames until 2010, when Planet Fitness opened up. Planet Fitness toke up most of the space. Some photos:

Willimantic/Storrs

95 Storrs Road (CT 195), Mansfield, CT, Inside the East Brook Mall
This location was opened in 1998, replacing the only Caldor in the county. It was vacant from 2002-2005. Kohl's opened up in the former Ames area, and has remained since. Photos:

35 Talcottville Rd (CT 83), Vernon, CT
This location replaced a Caldor in the late-1990s and was closed during the Ames bankruptcy. The location was replaced by Price Chopper in 2005, which it has remained since. Photos:
